Inspiring journeys of our students achieving their dreams
Marcus Johnson
Full Scholarship to Howard University
Class of 2024
When I joined District Youth Golf at age 14, I had never touched a golf club. I came from a family that couldn't afford golf lessons or country club memberships. The program gave me everything I needed to succeed - equipment, instruction, and most importantly, mentors who believed in me. Through their support, I not only learned to play golf but also developed discipline, confidence, and leadership skills. Now I'm playing Division I golf on a full scholarship at Howard University, studying computer science. Golf has opened doors I never imagined possible.
"District Youth Golf changed my life. I started with no experience and now I'm playing college golf on a full scholarship. The mentorship and support were incredible."
Sophia Williams
2025 Junior Champion & Georgetown Commit
Class of 2026
I joined the program when I was 10 years old, and it's been an incredible journey. Beyond learning golf, the program taught me about discipline, perseverance, and setting goals. My mentor, a successful entrepreneur, showed me how the skills I learned on the golf course applied to academics and life. I worked my way from beginner clinics to the advanced training program, winning the 2025 Junior Championship. I've committed to play golf at Georgetown University while pursuing pre-law studies.
"Not only did I learn golf, but I learned discipline, leadership, and how to set goals. These skills help me in school and in life every day."
Jordan Matthews
PGA Junior Golf Scholarship Winner
Class of 2023
Growing up in Southeast D.C., golf wasn't something kids in my neighborhood played. District Youth Golf introduced me to the sport at age 12 through a free community clinic. The coaches and mentors saw potential in me and encouraged me to join the advanced training program. They helped me with tournament prep, college recruiting, and even assisted my family with the logistics of visiting colleges. I earned a PGA Junior Golf Scholarship and now I'm thriving at North Carolina A&T State University.
"This program doesn't just teach golf - it teaches you how to dream bigger and work harder to achieve those dreams."
Amara Thompson
First-Generation College Student
Class of 2025
As a first-generation American and first-generation college student, I didn't have a roadmap for success. District Youth Golf provided that roadmap. My mentor helped me navigate the college application process, prepare for the SAT, and apply for scholarships. The program's emphasis on academics alongside golf kept me focused and motivated. I earned academic and athletic scholarships to Spelman College, where I'm studying business administration while playing golf.
"The mentorship program gave me the guidance I needed to become the first person in my family to attend college."
Isaiah Brown
STEM Scholar & Golf Team Captain
Class of 2024
I discovered District Youth Golf when I was struggling in school and lacked direction. The program became my anchor. Through golf, I learned discipline and time management. My mentor, a software engineer, introduced me to coding and showed me how technology and golf could both be part of my future. I improved my grades dramatically, became captain of my high school golf team, and earned a STEM scholarship to Morgan State University. I'm now studying software engineering while competing on the golf team.
"Golf taught me that success requires practice, patience, and perseverance - lessons that apply to everything in life."
Destiny Parker
Youth Mentor & Community Leader
Class of 2022
After benefiting from the program as a student, I returned as a volunteer and youth mentor. The program gave me so much that I wanted to give back. I'm currently studying sports management at University of Maryland while volunteering with District Youth Golf on weekends. Watching younger students discover golf and develop confidence, just like I did, is incredibly rewarding. The program doesn't just change individual lives - it creates a cycle of giving back to the community.
"Being able to mentor the next generation of golfers is my way of honoring the mentors who believed in me."
